Executive Director E-News 2.13.15 - Increased Needs Met

We have been gathering our year end statistics these past few weeks and I am always in a quandary when I look at some of these numbers. In particular, meals served. In 2013 we served 67,264 meals in the Drop-in Center. In 2014 that number increased to 73,259.  That is a 9% increase in one year.

While I am proud that the WSCC was able to serve all who came to our doors I continue to be distressed by the needs in our community. I would much rather report that the meals served had decreased by 9% as maybe this would mean that there was less hunger as more people were working and receiving a paycheck.

And then I hear about various proposals being talked about in Congress regarding additional cuts to the food stamp program. I shudder to think what our numbers will look like for 2015 if these cuts occur. I don’t understand why budget cuts often end up being borne by the poor.

Earlier today I helped distribute Valentine “goodie bags” to our clients during lunch. These bags were filled with some sweet treats and decorated by the students at St. Angela Merici School. These goodie bags brought smiles to all. We are blessed by the many school groups that assist us on a regular basis. Whether it is through their volunteer hours at the WSCC, school supply collections or “goodie bags” we appreciate all their efforts.

Please consider supporting The Friends of the WSCC at their upcoming event. The Friends is a group of very committed women who raise funds for Moriah House - the Women and Children’s Shelter and provide other needed items to the residents throughout the year. The 27thAnnual WOMEN HELPING WOMEN event is on Sunday, March 8th at LaCentre Banquet Facility. There is a boutique, silent auction, amazing baskets, and raffles. It is a wonderful event. Over the past 26 years the group has raised almost $900,000 for the Shelter.  For your invitation contact me or call Evelyn Allen at 440-871-6681.

Stay warm this weekend.

As always, thank you for reading,
